Monte Vulture (1,326 m) in northern Basilicata is an extinct Pleistocene volcano — the southernmost ancient volcano on the Italian peninsula. The two crater lakes (Laghi di Monticchio) fill the twin craters below the summit. The summit crater rim gives views from Naples to the Pollino. A 9th-century Benedictine abbey ruin inside one crater. Peregrine and lanner falcon nest in the lava cliffs.
