The Gran Cratere on the island of Vulcano in the Aeolian Islands is an active volcano with accessible crater rim (500 m). The crater fumaroles reach 200°C — the sulphur deposits create vivid yellow crusts on the rim. Boiling mud pools are at the base. All seven Aeolian Islands are visible from the crater rim on clear days. The island gave its name to all volcanoes (from Vulcan, the Roman god of fire).
