Gran Cratere di Vulcano
Sicily
The Gran Cratere of Vulcano is the most accessible active volcano in Italy — you can walk its rim without a guide. The sulfurous gases have bleached the crater walls yellow and white; fumaroles whistle and hiss. From the rim, all seven Aeolian Islands are visible, plus Etna and mainland Italy. Last eruption: 1888.
