The Via Appia Antica (312 BC) runs straight south from Rome through 2,000 years of history. The section through the Appian Way Regional Park is car-free on weekends; the original basalt (silex) cobblestones carry walkers past Catacombs, the Villa dei Quintili, circular Roman family mausoleums and the Villa di Massenzio with its chariot-racing track.
