The Gran Cono of Vesuvius (1,281 m) is the only active volcano on the European mainland — the summit trail from the car park at 1,000 m reaches the crater rim in 30 minutes. The crater is 300 m wide and 200 m deep with active sulphur fumaroles. The Bay of Naples, Capri, Ischia and the Sorrento Peninsula spread below. The 79 AD eruption buried Pompeii (8 km away) in 20 hours. Dogs on leash.
