Venice's historic core is entirely car-free and flat, walked rather than driven, from the domes and mosaics of the Basilica di San Marco and the Doge's Palace across to the Rialto Bridge's covered arcades over the Grand Canal. It's a different register from the outer-island entries covered elsewhere in this guide (Burano, Murano, Torcello, the Lido) — this is the historic centre itself.
