Gole del Nera, Valnerina
Umbria
The Gole del Nera above Scheggino cut 300 m deep through Triassic limestone — the deepest gorge in Umbria. The trail follows the river bank with views of the clear pools below. The Nera has one of the highest densities of kingfisher and dipper in central Italy. The forest in the gorge is a microclimate zone with yew and elder in the shade and mastic shrub on the sunlit cliff tops.
