Valli del Mincio
Lombardy
Where the Mincio river widens into the lakes surrounding Mantua, this protected wetland preserves one of the largest stands of white water lily in Italy, along with reed beds still cut by hand using centuries-old techniques. Herons, egrets, and the occasional purple heron stalk the shallows, best seen from a canoe or the towpath trails along the reserve's edges. The flat, watery landscape feels closer to the Po Delta than to the nearby Lombard hills.
