Valle delle Cartiere di Toscolano
Lombardy
The Toscolano stream tumbles down a narrow limestone ravine that once powered one of Europe's most important paper-making centers, and the trail up from Toscolano Maderno winds past roofless mill buildings, waterwheel pits, and stone drying sheds dating back to the 14th century. Waterfalls and swimming pools punctuate the climb through dense ivy-draped woodland. It's an unexpectedly industrial-archaeological detour just minutes from Garda's crowded lakefront.
