This UNESCO-listed site follows a dismantled railway line along the Anapo river gorge, its limestone cliffs honeycombed with thousands of chamber tombs cut by the ancient Sicel civilisation between the thirteenth and eighth centuries BC. The gorge is one of Sicily's richest for wildlife, sheltering porcupines, peregrine falcons and a notable population of otters along the clearer stretches of river. Byzantine-era cave dwellings and a small rupestrian church add later layers of history to the same cliffs.
