On 19 September 1991 two hikers found a 5,300-year-old frozen corpse on the Hauslabjoch between Italy and Austria — Ötzi the Ice Man. The approach from Val Senales through the Schnalstaler glacier area passes near the exact discovery site at 3,210 m. The surrounding Ötztal Alps are wild and remote.
