Val Savarenche
Aosta Valley
Val Savarenche was once King Vittorio Emanuele II's private royal hunting reserve, and the ibex he protected here became the founding population for the entire Gran Paradiso National Park. The valley trail climbs from stone hamlets through larch forest into open pasture where herds of ibex are still a near-daily sight, especially near dawn. Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, at the valley's head, serves as the main base for summit attempts on Gran Paradiso itself.
