Val Resia

Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Val Resia is a narrow Julian Alps valley cut off enough that its Slavic-origin inhabitants maintained a distinct dialect (Resian) and folk tradition — including the 'Orso' (bear) masked dance performed at Carnival, unchanged since at least the 13th century. The valley has brown bears and lynx present. The Resia river runs green through old-growth beech and silver fir forest unchanged for centuries.
