Val Malenco — Rifugio Zoia, Sondrio

The Val Malenco above Sondrio is a serpentinite valley — the greenish-black rock is the exposed upper mantle of the ancient Tethys ocean. The Rifugio Zoia (2,209 m) gives views of Monte Disgrazia (3,678 m) — one of the most beautiful Alpine peaks. The serpentinite rock hosts specialist plant communities found nowhere else in Italy. The Bernina massif is fully visible from the upper valley.
