The Parco Nazionale della Val Grande is Italy's largest designated wilderness area — a roadless massif above Lake Maggiore where villages were abandoned after WWII and the forest has entirely reclaimed roads, fields and buildings. There are no marked paths in the core zone; navigation is by compass. Wolves, golden eagle and peregrine all live here.
