Val di Gressoney below Monte Rosa is a Walser valley — colonised in the 13th century by German-speaking settlers from the Valais who built their distinctive wooden houses (stadel) and preserved their dialect (Titsch). The south wall of Monte Rosa (4,634 m) fills the valley head. The Lys glacier descends steeply. Ibex on the Monte Rosa moraine. The Walser museum in Gressoney-Saint-Jean tells the colonisation story.
