Val Trebbia — Gole del Trebbia

Emilia-Romagna

Hemingway described the Trebbia as 'the most beautiful valley in the world' after fishing it in the 1940s. The river runs turquoise over white limestone boulders through a deep gorge between Bobbio and Ottone. The water hosts one of Italy's few surviving white-clawed crayfish populations — a species extinct in most of its European range. Dogs can swim freely in the pools between boulders.
