Monte delle Formiche (480 m) above Monterenzio south of Bologna has the Santuario della Madonna di Monteveglio on its summit — the view takes in Bologna's red terracotta roofscape and towers spreading across the Po plain below. Common buzzard and red kite overhead. The Apennine foothills here have ancient castagneti (chestnut forests) producing the Castagna Montagna Bolognese DOP. Dogs off-leash.
