Centuries of peat extraction left behind a mosaic of flooded pits that has since regrown into dense reed beds and open water, protected as a nature reserve since 1982 at the southern edge of Lago d'Iseo. Herons, purple herons, and marsh harriers are regular sights from the boardwalks, and water lilies carpet many of the still pools by midsummer. Monte Isola rises directly across the lake as a backdrop to the reserve's northern edge.
