Tor Caldara

Lazio

This small reserve protects a stretch of coastal cliff shaped by ongoing geothermal activity, with sulphur-scented fumaroles still venting from the ground in a landscape that once supported a small alum-mining operation. Umbrella pines cover much of the clifftop, planted in past centuries to stabilize the eroding coast, and a medieval watchtower gives the reserve its name. Views open along an unusually undeveloped stretch of the Lazio coastline near Anzio.
