Gorropu — Gola di Supramonte

The Gola di Gorropu in the Supramonte of Baunei is Europe's deepest gorge — 500 m of vertical limestone walls enclosing a gorge floor only 4 m wide in the narrowest section. The approach from Su Gorroppu rifugio is 5 km through Mediterranean maquis. The limestone walls have fossil sea lilies (crinoids) preserved in the Jurassic rock. Bonelli's eagle patrols the rim. The gorge floor must be crossed boulder by boulder.
