Basilicata

The Lido di Metaponto has a wide sandy Ionian beach with warm shallow water — and directly behind the beach the archaeological site of Metaponto, one of the most important Greek colonies in Italy. The Temple of Hera (Tavole Palatine, 6th century BC) columns are visible from the beach 2 km inland. Pythagoras taught here. Dogs welcome year-round on designated sections.
