The Area Marina Protetta di Capo Rizzuto near Crotone is the largest marine protected area in the Mediterranean. Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting occurs on the beaches in summer — one of the most important nesting sites in Italy. The Ionian water is crystal clear and warm. The Torre Vecchia di Le Castella (1489 Aragonese castle on a sea islet) stands at the reserve entrance. Dogs welcome.
