The Madonie mountains reach 1,979 m at Pizzo Carbonara — the highest point in Sicily outside Etna. Piano Battaglia at 1,600 m is a ski resort in winter and a wildflower plateau in spring. The Madonie endemic plants include the Abies nebrodensis — the rarest fir tree in the world, with only 30 trees surviving in the wild.
