Serra delle Ciavole
Basilicata
This ridge hosts some of the oldest trees in Europe — twisted Pinus heldreichii specimens over a thousand years old, sculpted by wind into bonsai-like forms. The trail climbs from the Piani del Pollino through beech woods before opening onto bare limestone where the ancient pines cling to the rock. Wolves and Apennine chamois pass through the surrounding wilderness, though sightings are rare.
