Sentiero dei Briganti, Ciociaria
Lazio
The Sentiero dei Briganti links remote mountain villages in the Ciociaria hills (south Lazio) along the routes used by brigands after the Unification of Italy (1861). Thousands of southern peasants refused unification and retreated to the mountains as outlaws — the brigand wars lasted 15 years and killed more than the Risorgimento. The trail passes abandoned monasteries and Bourbon lookout towers.
