Selva di Meana, Monti Martani

Umbria

The Selva di Meana near Spoleto is an old-growth turkey oak (Quercus cerris) forest managed by the municipality since the 14th century. The forest was protected to supply charcoal and timber — this historic protection has created the finest old-growth deciduous forest in Umbria. Deer and wild boar are common; porcini mushrooms in October are exceptional. The paths are ancient charcoal-burner tracks.
