Sciara del Fuoco Viewpoint

This overlook at Pizzo Sopra la Fossa looks directly down onto the Sciara del Fuoco, the barren, steeply sloped scar on Stromboli's northwestern flank down which incandescent material has poured during eruptions for centuries, giving the volcano its nickname 'Lighthouse of the Mediterranean'. Stromboli has erupted in a near-continuous mild pattern for at least two thousand years, and small explosions are visible from this viewpoint especially after dark. Access above the lower slopes legally requires a licensed guide due to the volcano's unpredictable activity.
