Lago di Scanno e Gole del Sagittario
Abruzzo
Lago di Scanno famously appears heart-shaped from above — the aerial photo is one of Italy's most shared nature images. Below the lake, the Gole del Sagittario gorge narrows to a corridor between 200 m limestone walls, along which the old road from L'Aquila to Naples was carved. The gorge walk (3 km) passes the 8th-century abbey of San Cosma clinging to the gorge wall. Golden eagle nests above.
