The Parco della Murgia Materana across the Gravina canyon from the Matera sassi is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape — rock churches with Byzantine frescoes carved into the tufa, cave dwellings, Neolithic tombs and a wild ravine. Lesser kestrel colony breeds in the canyon walls (200+ pairs). Golden eagle and peregrine. The view of the sassi from the Murgia is extraordinary. Dogs off-leash.
