Sappada & the springs of the Piave
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Sappada (Plodn) keeps 15th-century wooden "blockbau" houses in a string of hamlets on a sunny terrace ringed by Dolomite peaks. An easy path leads up the Val Sesis to the modest spring where the Piave — Italy's "sacred river" — is born, with the Rifugio Sorgenti del Piave alongside.
