Santo Stefano was a wool-trade outpost of the Medici, and its uniform grey-stone houses, arched passageways and (rebuilt) Torre Medicea sit right where the Gran Sasso plateau begins. Lanes lead straight out onto lentil fields and the Campo Imperatore grassland.
