San Mauro Forte — Festa del Serpente

San Mauro Forte holds its own annual Festa del Serpente, in which live, harmless local snakes are draped over a saint's statue for a procession — one of a small handful of such Italian traditions and, unusually, entirely independent of the better-known ritual at Cocullo in Abruzzo. The village belvedere overlooks the Basento valley.
