The Salse di Nirano is Europe's largest mud volcano field — more than 80 mud cones bubbling cold methane and clay mud in a landscape unlike anything else in Italy. The mud volcanoes are protected as a regional nature reserve. The moonscape setting (bare grey clay surrounding the bubbling vents) is extraordinary. Dogs on leash on the marked circuit. Safe to approach the mud cones closely.
