The coast south of Otranto to Santa Maria di Leuca follows a limestone cliff edge above the Adriatic's clearest water. This is the easternmost point of continental Italy and the first to catch the rising sun. The Grotta della Poesia, where 4,000-year-old graffiti covers the walls, lies along the route.
