Saepinum, Sepino

Molise

Saepinum (modern Sepino) near Campobasso is the finest and most complete Roman provincial city in Italy — better preserved than Pompeii for street plan and more comprehensibly Roman than Ostia. The site is freely accessible (no gate) and farmers still occupy buildings within the Roman walls. Storks nest on the Roman columns. The transhumance route (trattura) for moving sheep from Abruzzo to Puglia passed through the forum.
