Sacro Monte di Varallo, Valsesia

The Sacro Monte di Varallo above the Valsesia is the original and most important of the nine Piedmont and Lombardy Sacred Mountains (UNESCO World Heritage 2003). Founded in 1491, it has 45 chapels with life-size terracotta figures by Gaudenzio Ferrari telling the life of Christ. The cobbled path winds through the chapels on a wooded hillside.
