Sacro Monte Calvario di Domodossola

Fourteen chapels depicting the Passion line the switchbacking path up Mattarella hill above Domodossola, a UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte built between 1656 and 1826. Chestnut woods shade most of the ascent before opening onto a terrace overlooking the confluence of the Ossolan valleys, with the peaks around Alpe Devero visible beyond. It's a working pilgrimage site as much as a viewpoint, still used for Easter processions.
