The salt pans between Trapani and Marsala have been harvested since Phoenician times. Flamingos wade through the shallow pink-tinted water year-round; ancient windmills still pump brine between the pans. At sunset the whole landscape turns gold and rose in one of Sicily's most painted scenes.
