Riserva Naturale Saline di Trapani e Paceco

Sicily

The Saline di Trapani e Paceco have produced sea salt by traditional wind-and-sun evaporation since medieval times, and the old windmills still stand among the geometric pans. The shallow, mineral-rich water now attracts large numbers of flamingos, especially in winter, alongside avocets and black-winged stilts. Evening light turns the pans pink and gold, a favourite time for photographers.
