The Riserva Naturale di Vendicari near Noto is the finest coastal wetland in Sicily — salt lagoons, sandy beach and Mediterranean scrub under a Norman watchtower. Flamingo (1,000+), glossy ibis and spoonbill are regular. Loggerhead turtle nests on the beach. The winter wildfowl concentrations are the largest in Sicily. The Norman tuna processing facility (tonnara) is a historic monument in the reserve.
