Riserva di Guardiaregia, Campobasso
Molise
Guardiaregia Vecchia above Campobasso was a medieval village evacuated in 1959 due to landslide risk. The canyon below — Gole del Quirino — has 200 m limestone walls with golden eagle and peregrine nesting. Wolf has been resident since the 1990s. The abandoned village ruins inside the canyon are extraordinary. The reserve protects 2,400 ha of old oak and beech forest.
