Riserva Naturale Monte Rufeno

Straddling the border with Tuscany and Umbria near Acquapendente, this is the largest protected area in Lazio, covering rolling oak and chestnut woodland that has been recolonized by wolves in recent decades. Several medieval hamlets within the reserve were abandoned generations ago and now stand as quiet, half-ruined waypoints along the trail network. The area's remoteness has kept it one of the least-visited corners of the region.
