Riserva Naturale Marina di Miramare
Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Established in 1986 but protecting waters around Miramare Castle, the 19th-century residence built for Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg before his ill-fated reign in Mexico, this reserve covers a short stretch of rocky Adriatic coastline with unusually clear water for the northern Adriatic. Snorkelling trails let visitors follow marked underwater routes past seagrass beds and rocky reef life.
