Lago di Campotosto (1,430 m) in the Gran Sasso park is the highest lake in the Apennines — a reservoir with extraordinary wildlife. Osprey fishes regularly. Red kite has bred since 2017 (one of the easternmost breeding pairs in Italy). Golden eagle and peregrine. The Gran Sasso group is reflected in the still morning water. Wolf pack uses the lake shore at night. Dogs welcome on the circuit.
