The reserve protects the sun-baked flank of Monte San Marco, a mosaic of rock, downy-oak scrub and grassland that shelters a notable population of lizards, snakes (including the rare four-lined snake) and nesting kestrels. A path climbs from the stone village to the ridge and its view over the Isernia basin.
