The Riserva Naturale Marina di Miramare at Trieste was Italy's first marine reserve (1986) — the park was planted in 1860 by Archduke Maximilian (later Emperor of Mexico) around the Castello di Miramare. The marine reserve below has exceptional Adriatic biodiversity. Sea bass, bream and octopus. The castle gardens are extraordinary. The Adriatic Gulf of Trieste is visible from the castle terrace. Dogs on leash.
