The Valli di Argenta near Ferrara protect the last remnant of the vast Ferrarese wetlands drained in the 20th century. The Campotto pool has the largest purple heron colony in Italy (80+ nests) with night heron, squacco heron and little egret also breeding. Little bittern skulks in the reed beds. Kingfisher on every channel. Dogs on leash only.
