The Riserva Naturale dei Calanchi di Atri near Pescara is a UNESCO candidate site of eroded blue clay badlands above the Adriatic. Fossil whale and sea turtle skeletons emerge from the clay walls after rain. The wildlife includes European rollers (one of Italy's most colourful birds) and tortoises.
