Riserva Naturale Calanchi di Atri

The Riserva Naturale Calanchi di Atri protects a dramatic clay badland landscape surrounding the ancient hilltop city of Atri. The grey clay erodes into spectacular fins, gullies and mushroom formations. The spectacled salamander (Salamandrina perspicillata) — the rarest salamander in Europe — lives in every small pool in the reserve. The reserve is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards on the Adriatic slopes of Abruzzo.
